There is no fixed beginning. There is no predetermined end.

Damon’s paintings begin intuitively.

Rather than working from a set image or concept, he responds to colour, texture, movement and whatever is happening around him in the moment. Layers are built, altered and obscured as the painting develops.

The process is deliberately instinctive.

A mark might suggest a form. A colour might change the direction of the entire piece. Something that initially feels finished may be painted over and become the beginning of something else.

This constant evolution is what makes each work unique.

Damon describes his creative process as allowing his subconscious to take over — creating a space where observation, memory and imagination can exist together.

Influences

Damon’s artistic language has developed through a combination of personal experience, experimentation and observation.

Growing up in Christchurch, his early relationship with painting laid the foundation for his practice. Later experiences in Australia, including collaborating with Indigenous artists, introduced new perspectives on storytelling and visual expression that became an important influence on his creative development.

His work continues to evolve through these experiences, alongside an ongoing fascination with science fiction, imagined environments and the unknown.
